Help with hosting, joining and troubleshooting an Upkeep table.

Starting a game

1. On the device that will be the host (an iPad works well in the middle of the table), choose a starting life total, set the players, and tap Host a game.
2. The host shows a QR code and its address as text.
3. On each other device, open Upkeep and tap Scan QR code, or type the host's address, for example 192.168.1.5:8080, and tap Join.

Every device must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Upkeep works entirely over your local network and does not use the internet.

Troubleshooting

A device can't join

• Check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, not one on Wi-Fi and one on cellular.
• Some guest and public networks isolate devices from each other, which blocks Upkeep. Try a home network or a phone's personal hotspot.
• Allow Upkeep to find devices on your local network. If you declined the prompt, turn it on in Settings, then Upkeep, then Local Network.
• If scanning fails, type the host's address instead. It's shown on the host's invite screen.

The camera doesn't open for scanning

Upkeep only uses the camera to read a join QR code. If you declined access, turn it on in Settings, then Upkeep, then Camera. Typing the address works without the camera.

A phone went to sleep or lost Wi-Fi

Its seat keeps its last life total, and anyone else can still adjust it. When the device reconnects, it catches up automatically. Nobody's total is lost.

The host left or quit the app

The game lives on the host device. If the host leaves, the game ends for everyone, and moving a game to another host isn't supported yet. Keep the host device awake and in the app during play.

Buttons and bars are in the way

On iPad, the hosting and connection bars can be collapsed with the small handle on their edge to give the seats the full screen.

Common questions

Can anyone change any life total?

Yes. Any device can adjust any player, and every change shows up everywhere. Two people tapping at once both count.

How do I fix a mis-tap?

A green or red badge shows the net change over the last ten seconds, so you can see the slip. Tap the life number to enter an exact value, or tap the other side to reverse it.

How do I undo an elimination?

Eliminations are never undone automatically. Open the player's detail sheet and turn the eliminated toggle off.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. The protocol is open and platform neutral so a client for another platform could join an existing host.
